Bhakti Life

front_new

Bhakti-yoga is not an armchair philosophy, a religious doctrine or a Sunday ritual. It is a way of life. While the process may appear simplistic, when practiced with sincerity and purity it actually combines and synthesizes all other disciplines. In the Bhakti-Rasamrita Sindhu, a 16th century thesis on the science of devotion, the great teacher Rupa Goswami perfectly outlines how to practice bhakti-yoga in one’s daily life.

The practice of each aspect of bhakti-yoga is unlimited, and it can be developed, enhanced and refined over time. Engaging in these practical acts of bhakti-yoga will awaken a deep sense of fulfillment, happiness and enduring satisfaction. Indeed, Krishna assures us that the individual who is steadfast and determined in such spiritual practices can see him face-to face. It’s that simple.

This course provides an opportunity to learn more about the practice of bhakti, in today’s modern world. It acts as a great sequel to the “Gita Life” course, as well as a standalone series which will aid the student to make bhakti a practical reality in his or her daily life.

Core Topics to be covered:

– What function does culture play in our lives?

Male-Female Psychology

We are all feminine on the absolute plane, but within the material sphere of duality, we are either masculine or feminine, purusha or prakrti. Since this energy is a fundamental principle in creation, pervading individuals both within and without and in many areas of life, it must be understood with clarity by both sides. Our going back to Godhead is dependent on our realization of what vehicle we are moving around in, so as to negotiate it properly.

There is no doubt that with this knowledge, marriages, raising children, and all relationships can be developed and maintained much more effectively.

Some of the core topics that will be covered in this seminar include:
– Men should be sense controlled and sensitive
– Women should be satisfied and chaste
– What is a marriage really? Arranged marriages versus unarranged
– House versus home
– Communication: how + why does it break down between men and women
– Children: How to raise them and how not. When should the parents let go?

Going to the fundamental essence of this science can help one to understand the world from a much deeper perspective. Despite its relevance, these topics are not often talked about. Please come and make use of this great opportunity.

How to be Krishna Confident

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2015

with HG Ghanashyam Priya das

Krishna consciousness is for everyone, there is no doubt about it. Indeed, Srila Prabhupada built a house in which the whole world can live. But in order to invite the world into our wonderful home, we have to help them to see the benefits of doing so.

Too often we lack confidence in presenting Krishna consciousness to others. How can we make it relevant to others and at the same time remain true to the ultimate reality? At work, at home, with friends, giving talks – there are a multitude of arenas where, as devotees, we struggle to represent ourselves in a credible way.

With this in mind, the College of Vedic Studies brings to you a series of 6 seminars and workshops on how to present Krishna consciousness to a contemporary audience.

In this course we will cover:

  • Insights about sharing Krishna consciousness from scriptures: How have the representatives of the Lord shared his teachings?
  • Public speaking training. Guidance on how to prepare & research for a presentation. Tips on presentation styles and formats
  • How to relate our philosophy to key world events in fields such as politics, economics and religion
  • On the spot thinking. How to answer common questions around family challenges, benefits of meditation, reasons for being vegetarian etc.
  • How to connect our families, careers and networks to Krishna Consciousness
  • How to observe and understand what a person needs to take the next step in their spiritual journey
  • What is genuine care? How to provide 1:1 advice and guidance tailored to each individual

Course Dates: each Sunday from 21st June 2015 (6 weeks)
Time: 11am – 1.30pm
Venue: Bhaktivedanta Manor
Course Fee: £35

Deity Worship Course

The Essentials of Deity Worship

Prabhpad

“Generally in the conditioned state we are contaminated. But this worshiping system called arcana-vidhi cleanses the polluted heart and one becomes actually fit for becoming qualified brahmana.” (SP to Brahmananda, 15th September, 1968)

Srila Prabhupada instituted in ISKCON the most exquisite standards of Deity Worship and his desire was for these standards to be maintained.

At Bhaktivedanta Manor, our attempt is to please Their Lordships and Srila Prabhupada by maintaining and excelling these high levels of service and devotion. Every day, Sri Sri Radha-Gokulananda, Sri Sri Sita-Rama Laxman Hanuman and Sri Sri Gaura-Nitai are daily given 6 offerings and aratis, bathed and dressed twice.

Of course, serving the deities is not child’s play. Amongst many things, it requires knowledge, attention to detail and devotion. Furthermore, it requires training. To this end, this course, “The Essentials of Deity Worship”, is being organised to ensure that the standards of worship to Their Lordships continue to develop and increase. The sessions will be facilitated by Murli Manohara Prabhu and Gadadhara Prabhu, head pujaris at ISKCON London and Bhaktivedanta Manor, respectively.

There will be two days of lessons and practical workshops giving in depth insights into the theory and practice of deity worship in the temple environment. So whether you are currently engaged in deity worship at the Manor, or hope to be in the future, please attend this course. Open to both first and second initiates.

The content of the two days’ training is given below:

Saturday 27th June 2015 (please note, change of date)

  • Why perform deity worship?
  • The Lord is present in His deity form
  • Definition and goal of arcana
  • Authenticity of deity worship
  • Pancaratrika & bhagavata-vidhi
  • Practical Sessions on acamana and offering arati

Saturday 4th July 2015 (please note, change of date)

  • Qualifications for arcana
  • Position of the spiritual master
  • Variations in arcana procedures and standards of worship
  • Mood of worship
  • Values, attitudes, and behavior of a pujari
  • Purity
  • Practical Sessions on bhoga offerings & waking and resting the deities

“If one attains perfection in Deity worship, that is called arcana-siddhi. Arcana-siddhi means simply by Deity worship one goes back to Godhead immediately after this life. So this arcana-siddhi program is given in the Narada-pancaratra especially for the householders. Householders cannot undergo strict disciplinary activities of austerity, therefore for every householder the path of arcana-siddhi is very much recommended.” (SP to Himavati, 18th March, 1969)

Course Dates: each Saturday from 27th June 2015 (2 weeks)
Time: 10am – 5pm (lunch will be provided, 1pm-2pm)

Course Fee: £40

Caitanya-caritamrta Compact

Wednesday, April 15th, 2015

with HG Sutapa das

Lord-Caitanya-Dances-with-His-Followers

In 1965, when Srila Prabhupada suffered sea sickness and multiple heart attacks on his voyage to America, his reading of Caitanya-caritamrta brought him great solace. He said it was the “nectarine of life” and his “source of vitality.” Srila Prabhupada also recollects how Caitanya-caritamrta was his spiritual master’s favourite book. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur had predicted that a time would come when people would learn the Bengali language simply to relish this classic composition of Krisnadasa Kaviraja Goswami. At present, however, Caitanya-caritamrta remains a relatively unexplored literature. Since the studies of Bhagavad-gita and Srimad Bhagavatam are vast in and of themselves, many neglect the opportunity to bathe in the delightful narrations of Sri Caitanya’s life.

In 5 weeks, we hope to:
– Present an easy-to-follow overview of Sri Caitanya’s life
– Provide a ‘road map’ and framework for anyone who desires to explore the Caitanya-caritamrta in greater detail

Please Note: A foundational understanding of Bhagavad-gita and Srimad Bhagavatam is recommended before undertaking this course. It is for more experienced devotees in Krishna consciousness.

Course Dates: Sundays 26th July & 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th August 2015 (5 weeks)
Time: 10am – 1pm
Venue: Bhaktivedanta Manor
Course Fee: £30

Cleansing the mirror of the heart

LordChaitanya69

During Caitanya Maharapbhu’s 18 year stay in Jagannath Puri, the Lord would annually gather together hundreds of associates and together they would clean the Gundica Temple, in preparation for the Ratha Yatra and the arrival of Lord Jagannath. It was a wonderful jubilant affair that is described in detail in Caitanya-caritamrta Madhya 12.

But this cleaning was no ordinary cleaning. It carries a great symbolism for the gradual process of cleansing the heart of the conditioned living entity through the practice of Krsna consciousness. It is described that according to the cleanliness of the heart of the individual, he was able to clean with greater quality.

Lessons from the Life of Dhruva

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The Story of Dhruva Maharaj, described in the Fourth Canto of Srimad Bhagavatam, is profound and instructive in so many ways. A young prince, wounded by the ignominy of rejection from his father, enters the forest to find the Lord and demand a kingdom of his own. Instructed by the great sage Narada, his severe austerities not only gain him an audience with the Lord, but at the same time transform him. His mission was initially highly motivated but ended in him taking full shelter of the Lord without any desire for self-gratification.

This was one of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s favourite pastimes, one that he would delight in hearing repeatedly. Come and get the essence of this wonderful narration and learn some of the invaluable life lessons it has to offer.

Secrets of Success – and Failure – in Devotional Service

Wednesday, March 4th, 2015

with HH Giriraj Swami

GirirajSwamiTalk

tṛṇād api su-nīcena
taror iva sahiṣṇunā
amāninā māna-dena
kīrtanīyaḥ sadā hariḥ

“One who thinks himself lower than grass, who is more tolerant than a tree, and who does not expect personal honor but is always prepared to give respect to others can very easily always chant the holy name of the Lord.” (Siksastakam 3)

Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura, the spiritual master of our Srila Prabhuada, said to his disciples in his last days on the planet that one’s advancement in devotional life is measured by how closely and strictly we imbibe the principles of this verse in our lives.

In spiritual life, there are a few key secrets, such as this one, which if adhered to can propel us forward. There is no limit to the advancement we can make in Krishna consciousness. But ultimately the rate of advancement in spiritual life depends on the attitude of the follower, as Srila Prabhupada explains in the Preface to the Nectar of Instruction. Thus we have to continuously improve ourselves, looking to imbibe the ingredients for success in our endeavours.

Relatedly, it is important to be aware of potential pitfalls in spiritual life, so that one may take necessary steps to avoid them.

Please come and hear from Maharaj as he shares with us some of the deepest insights and realisations after over 40 years of dedicated practice.
