Odissi Basics

with Keli Cancala dasi

Odissi is a devotional dance form originating in the temples of ancient India. This 10-session course covers the origin and fundamental principles of Odissi Dance, including its distinctive traditional body warm-up system, basic footwork, stances and movements including signature torso, eye, and neck movements. Rhythmic patterns and preliminary steps will be practiced using Odissi’s fundamental dance positions (chouka and tribhanga), as well as classical hand gesture (mudras) applications. You will also learn a short dance piece by the end of the course.
