Coming Closer to Krishna

Coming Closer to Krishna – new Temple President launches this year’s theme

Visakha Dasi has now been warmly welcomed as the new Temple President of Bhaktivedanta Manor.

She is well known in the international devotee community for the time she spent as Srila Prabhupada’s photographer and as an avid writer for Back to Godhead magazine. In more recent years she assisted her husband, Yadubara Das, in producing the award-winning film, Hare Krishna! The Mantra, the Movement and the Swami Who Started It All. Her book Five Years, Eleven Months and a Lifetime of Unexpected Love: A Memoir, which depicts her time spent with Srila Prabhupada, has also received great reviews.

“The theme for the Temple community this year is Coming Closer to Krishna” she explained during the first meeting (Manor update) of the year attended by residents and staff members.

She asked those present what they felt they needed and expected from a Temple President. “What came out overwhelmingly was their need for unity in our large and diverse community,” Visakha Dasi explained. “They would like to see devotees of all ages, nationalities, races, genders, and backgrounds overlook these superficial differences and serve Krishna together. With this devotional mood we can all come closer to Krishna and enhance our community’s unity.

“I remember the first pandal [tent] program that Srila Prabhupada’s disciples organised in 1971. It was in Bombay, lasted 10 days, and was attended by 10,000 people each night and 20,000 on the weekends. On the final Sunday, an ISKCON devotee couple were married on stage – – one was from Australia and the other from Sweden. Srila Prabhupada remarked, “This is the real United Nations!” and in response 20,000 people cheered. It was incredible; the sound was tumultuous!”

ISKCON UK 50th Anniversary Dinner

Sunday, November 3rd, 2019

Bhaktivedanta Manor organised a special dinner at the Avanti House Secondary School, in honour of the 50th Anniversary of ISKCON’s establishment in the UK. The main invitees were disciples of Srila Prabhupada and other key senior devotees, and it was a great opportunity for the younger generations to serve, join in Srila Prabhupada Guru-Puja and listen to the memories of first generation of ISKCON devotees.

Speakers included Shyamasunder das, Gurudas, Malati dasi, Dhananjay das, former Manor President Akhandadhi das and Governing Body Commissioner (GBC) for ISKCON UK, Praghosa das.

The event was mainly organised by Kalakanti Radhika dasi, who, along with a dedicated team, worked tirelessly behind the scenes with the purpose of honouring their seniors.

Bala Gopal dasi oversaw the cooking of the three course dinner, Anuradha made a beautiful themed cake and the event was supported Bhaktivedanta Manor’s Senior Management.

“The event was a very uplifting and moving experience,” exclaimed Jyestha dasi, “A big thank you to everyone involved.” It definitely made an impact and it was greatly appreciated.”

Initiation Policy Document

Saturday, November 2nd, 2013

Dear Devotees,

Please accept our humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Over the past year, after much thought and discussion, Bhaktivedanta Manor Initiation Committee has made significant changes to the standards and procedures for initiation. We hope you will find the new Initiation Procedures & Standards Policy more informative and fairer. The standards have been revised and separated into two categories; essential and desirable, making them more realistically achievable.

Devotees who feel they are ready for first or second initiation, and who wish to have the previous initiation policy applied to them, MUST email the information requested below to initiation@krishnatemple.com by midnight 31/12/13 (you must submit the details again, even if you have supplied this information in the past to your mentor/member of management etc):

1) your legal name and, if applicable, your spiritual name

2) your contact telephone no.

3) whether you are desiring first or second initiation

4) name of your Sanga/Bhakti Vriksha/Nama Hatta leader

5) name of your mentor

We will discuss with your mentor or yourself your personal situation, and (if appropriate) we will apply the previous policy to you if that is your wish.

The new Initiation Procedures & Standards Policy will apply to ALL devotees from 01/01/14 other than those who have supplied the above details to initiation@krishnatemple.com before the deadline of 31/12/13 and have been accepted to be assessed on the previous policy.  In all cases, any letters of recommendation for initiation will be valid for a period of one year only. If initiation is not taken within that period, the new policy will apply in full. Devotees are therefore strongly advised that they as soon as possible:

  • read through the new policy
  • register with the Mentorship System
  • begin following the procedures and standards as set out in the new policy

Devotees should especially note that if they do not email their details before the 31/12/13 then it will be at least two years from the time that they start following the requirements set out in the new policy before they may be recommended for initiation. After 31/12/13 devotees should NOT come directly to the Initiation Committee requesting initiation but rather their mentor should approach the Committee when they feel the time is appropriate – more details in the policy.

See below to view the Initiation Procedures & Standards Policy; paper copies are available from the Manor reception desk. We request all devotees to carefully read through the policy as it is very likely that it will affect you at some stage in your Krishna conscious journey whether you aspire for initiation in the future, or whether you are already initiated and are guiding someone else.

For those wishing to attend the Guru and Disciple Course by Kripamoya prabhu and Srutidharma prabhu, the next course will be on Saturday 30th November 2013 from 10am to 4pm at Bhaktivedanta Manor. For more information, and to register, please visit the Manor reception or log-on: http://www.bhaktivedantamanor.co.uk/home/?p=8159
