The term Ayurveda is derived from two Sanskrit words: ‘ayus’ meaning life and ‘vid’ meaning knowledge. The “science of life”, Ayurveda, is increasingly popular the world over, as people look for alternatives to allopathic care.

The Ayurvedic teachings have huge amounts of valuable insights into all aspects of our lives, from the food we eat, the times we rest and rise and overcoming various health problems.

Over the coming months, the College of Vedic Studies continues the longstanding Ayurveda Series. We have two great courses lined up which are relevant to anyone who wants to learn more about this great science of health and wellbeing. Please do not miss them!

Ayurvedic Diet

We often hear the common phrase… “you are what you eat”. Indeed, we understand that our diet has a significant impact on our body and even our state of consciousness. The Vedic literatures in the form of Ayurveda provide a scientific guide to our diet and the process of eating; what, when, how, and much more!

This session will focus on answering some key questions, such as:

  • Eating: what, when, where and in which order?
  • What are the six tastes and how do they affect the doshas?
  • Which foods are incompatible (bad combinations)?
  • When should one drink water and how much?
  • How many meals should one take?
  • What should one do after eating to aid digestion?

Kitchen Remedies

We all suffer from various ailments from time to time, some being more serious than others. But did you know that rather than bottles and tubes of various concoctions from your local chemists, you can use common ingredients from your kitchen to make some of the most potent, effective and natural remedies?

This session will take 15 spices and food items, all of which are easily available from any local store (or your own kitchen!), and hone in on their great medicinal properties. Say goodbye to the common cold, various digestive problems and some of the worst skin problems using the following items:

Turmeric, cinnamon, cardamom, coriander, cumin, nutmeg, dates, caraway seeds, black pepper, ghee, pomegranate, coconut, honey, milk, sugar

There will even be live demonstrations of some simple recipes – not one to be missed!

About the speaker
Ananga Sakhi devi dasi has been formally involved with Ayurveda for almost 15 years. She has run clinics across London, delivered numerous talks and seminars and has written a number of articles on different health topics. Her various talks on ‘Pregnancy’ and ‘Ayurveda for the Winter’ were very well received, and thus she is returning to continue with the ‘Ayurveda Series’, with this overview of Ayurveda in everyday life.

Aside from her Vedic understanding, she also has a BSc in Biomedical Sciences, which allows her to understand the science of Ayurveda within the modern context. She is married with two young boys, giving her ample opportunity to put this age old wisdom into practical experience with her own family.
