Bhakti Vaibhava

Thursday, September 13th, 2012
“If you read Srimad Bhagavatam then immediately, you will realize God”
– His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Bhakti Vaibhava is a systematic study of Cantos 1 to 6 of the Srimad Bhagavatam (Bhāgavata Purāṇa), the spotless Purana, which is “directed toward bringing about a revolution in the impious lives of this world’s misdirected civilization.” (SB 1.5.11)

One may have listened to many lectures on the text, and even read through this epic work numerous times, but often we find that only when studying it do we really gain a grasp of the key personalities, events, and lessons that need to be learnt from this paramahamsa-samhita. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to dedicate some time to a step-by-step study of this great work, Srila Prabhupada’s magnum opus. Indeed, Rupa Goswami explains in his Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu that even a small attachment for Srimad Bhagavatam can arouse devotional ecstasy (bhava bhakti) even in a neophyte

The three-hour sessions are interactive and thought-provoking, encouraging learners to think for themselves about the practical application of the text to everyday life. The insights and association of fellow students also adds a unique flavour to the classes. Learners will have the opportunity to study each canto in turn, looking at Srila Prabhupada’s purports and the various pastimes from different viewpoints. Assessment is voluntary (some choose to be in the ‘hearer category’ and are therefore not liable to sit the tests) and takes place through homework assignments, some short written tests and sloka memorisation.

Bhakti Vaibhava is number two of the four official courses set up by Srila Prabhupada for ISKCON (see .pdf document below for more details). Therefore it is generally a requirement that one will have completed the Bhakti Shastri course before embarking on Bhakti Vaibhava.

The course is accredited by the renowned Mayapur Institute, and successful candidates who complete the first 6 cantos will be awarded the Bhakti Vaibhava Degree. Students will enrol on the course one canto at a time.

In Praise of The Gita

“When I read the Bhagavad-gita and reflect about how God created this universe everything else seems so superfluous.”~ Albert Einstein
“The Bhagavad-gita has a profound influence on the spirit of mankind by its devotion to God which is manifested by actions.”~ Dr. Albert Schweitzer
“The Bhagavad-gita is the most systematic statement of spiritual evolution of endowing value to mankind. It is one of the most clear and comprehensive summaries of perennial philosophy ever revealed; hence its enduring value is subject not only to India but to all of humanity.”~ Aldous Huxley
“When doubts haunt me, when disappointments stare me in the face, and I see not one ray of hope on the horizon, I turn to Bhagavad-gita and find a verse to comfort me; and I immediately begin to smile in the midst of overwhelming sorrow. Those who meditate on the Gita will derive fresh joy and new meanings from it every day.”~ Mahatma Gandhi
“I owed a magnificent day to the Bhagavad-gita. It was the first of books’ it was as if an empire spoke to us, nothing small or unworthy, but large, serene, consistent, the voice of an old intelligence which in another rage and climate had pondered and thus disposed of the same questions which exercise us.”~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
