The Four Goals of Family Life
Sunday, October 5th, 2014with Jagannathesvari devi dasi (ACBSP)
Based on the book of the same name, this course is taught by the author as a sequel to the book. The aim of the course is to further explore and understand some of the vital issues presented in the book and to open them up for discussion.
According to Vedic teachings, the four goals of human life are dharma (religious principles, or righteous action), artha (economic development), kama (gratification of the senses), and moksa (spiritual liberation). A balanced household life, in which material and spiritual progress are both valued, combines these four goals together in harmony. By pursuing one’s dharma, and by dovetailing artha and kama according to dharma, one can ultimately attain moksa. The course examines these four principles, how they apply to us today, and how they can be combined together for balancing spiritual and material advancement in contemporary family life.
The course includes the most fundamental Vedic teachings on marriage and family life in all four of the above departments, focussing on the most essential aspects rather than the details, and seeing how these principles relate to modern life in the Western world. The purpose is to understand how essential principles of Vedic culture can be practically applied to deal with the day-to-day challenges of modern family life, with the aim of cultivating peace, prosperity, happiness, and progress in the home and in relationships.
Topics include religious principles for householders in general and for men and women specifically, husband-wife relationships, home economics, raising a family, educating children, spiritual activities in the home, social relationships, balancing material and spiritual life, cultivating detachment, and dovetailing material assets in devotional service to Krsna.
