Janmashtami Appeal

Since the pandemic struck, the temple had to be closed and finance streams for daily needs have reduced dramatically. However, the daily standards of worship which include six aratis and food offerings, daily change of outfits and care of Krishna’s cows has been maintained, despite the challenging situation.

My dear friends, I humbly request you to give generously, for Shree Krishna Janmashtami Utsav and Bhaktivedanta Manor. Giving is an act of devotion, an expression of gratitude for Lord Krishna’s grace and blessings upon us.

Please support this year’s Appeal with your heartfelt contribution.

Janmashtami at Home

Wednesday, July 1st, 2020

The annual celebration of Lord Krishna’s appearance on this earthly planet, is the biggest spiritual festival in the yearly calendar. On this day, millions of devotees flock to temples and festival grounds to see Krishna, worship Him, hear about Him, sing for Him, and absorb their minds in Him! The day begins at 4:30am with the first worship of the day, and culminates with the beautiful final worship at midnight (the exact time that Lord Krishna appeared in the world).

This year we are faced with a global pandemic during this most auspicious festival period. With government regulations in place, we’ll be celebrating Janmashtami in a different way. Devotees of Krishna are always positive – in every difficulty there is an opportunity! This year (along with visiting the temple) you will have the unique opportunity to observe a special Janmashtami celebration in your own home!

Worship at Home

Every home can be a temple – you can set up a sacred space with deities, pictures, sacred items and books. On Janmashtami day make special decorations around the altar. This creates the mood of festivity and can be particularly fun for the children.

If you have deities of the Lord, you can begin the day by offering a nice plate of sweets when you greet Them in the morning. If you do not have deities you can offer the sweets and a simple worship to a picture of the Lord. Krishna’s picture is non-different from His deity form. You can also offer Krishna a lamp, fragrant incense, and some fruits.

You can bathe the Lord with flower petals. This will really excite the children and keep them enthusiastic in their devotion. Various kinds and colours of flowers can be petaled and offered individually in sprays of colors over Their Lordships.

Fasting & Feasting

Fasting from all foods until midnight is recommended. We should endeavour to follow this injunction but if fasting is too difficult due to health reasons then try to eat only light foods during the day (like non-grain preparations). Krishna will see your sincere endeavour to fulfil the rules and regulations and reciprocate with you accordingly.

Just as you enjoy your favourite preparations on your birthday so too does the Lord. Having said that, His favourite above all others is your love and devotion. You can make a special endeavour in cooking a wonderful feast for Him as you would do for a family member’s birthday. He is a major part of your household so cook for Him as you would for your child, meditating on what He would like. A simple cooking standard would include rice, dhal, chapatis, puris, subjis (vegetable preparations of different variety and flavours), and savouries such as samosas and kachoris, sweets and a drink.

Reading

Srila Prabhupada has kindly provided us with the story of Lord Krishna’s advent and other exciting pastimes in “Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead” or in Srimad Bhagavatam Canto Ten. Reading these pastimes on Janmashtami will greatly benefit us and help us understand the glories of the Lord more deeply.

Chanting

Chanting and singing the Hare Krishna maha mantra is the essence of our devotion. It is an intimate exchange of love with Lord Krishna, pleasing Him for devotional service unto His lotus feet. Try to chant more than your normal quota and be more attentive being absorbed in loving thoughts of the Lord.

Most importantly, it enlightens us as to how we can find true happiness through connection with God. In every generation, over thousands of years, it has provided unceasing inspiration to thinkers, leaders, and spiritualists alike.
